Many of the First Nations peoples had a tradition of going on vision quests, and finding their animal totem through that quest. This is not to be mistaken for a zodiac.

No such thing. Some new age "shaman" came up with this foolishness. Astrology never was a Native American thing. It was always from the eastern societies. All new agers want to have a "wolf spirit". A few years ago, they all wanted bear spirits. I don't think it does. I'm an Aquarius and I was born in the month of the odder. I'm half native American and my family believes in animal spirits and all that stuff, we do rituals to find our animal spirits, and I'm a wolf.
