How did certain planets become associated with certain signs of the zodiac?

and when and if anybody knows where did this come about ?

Thanks for your answers! How did certain planets become associated with certain signs of the zodiac?
The outer planets were not known until the invention of the telescope. So when these were found (by astronomers) astrologers had to make up attributes and assign signs. The last time this happened was with Pluto. This was given the sign of Scorpio. Mars use to rule both Scorpio and Aries but only now keeps the latter. Saturn had both Capricorn and Aquarius (now Uranus) and Jupiter had Sagittarius and Pisces (now Neptune).

Some planets still rule two signs. Mercury is still the ruling planet of Gemini and Virgo. Venus is the ruling planet of Taurus and Libra. 12 signs and twelve planets would be ideal. Astrology will change when there is an advantage. Even though Pluto is not considered anymore, it will not be given up by astrologers. How did certain planets become associated with certain signs of the zodiac?
Maybe because pluto is so mysterious and little is known about it, it became the ruler of scorpio.

Leo likes to be the centre of attention more so than any other sign so it is ruled by the sun(centre of the solar system).

I'm guessing the moon is associated with emotions because the moon is the closest orbiting object to the earth. Cancer has fluctuating moods-like the tides.

Jupiter is "big and jolly" (expansion), saggitarians like to learn know things, expand their knowledge.

These are just guesses!
